解析複變函數f(z)的極點是一個孤立奇異點(isolatedsingularity)：當z→a時f(z)在不含極點的近鄰可以Laurent級數寫為：極點a稱為k階極點，若且惟若上述Laurent級數中，Ck≠0而Cm＝0（當m＞k）亦即：當a為f(z)的k階極點，則a必為1/f(z)的k階零點亦即：（參見orderofzero）
